Heaters for Henderson
  The Volunteer and Information Center is initiating a new program that will provide electric space heaters for low income households in the Henderson community.  Individuals may make a monetary donation toward the purchase of a new electric heater or may choose to purchase an electric heater to donate to this program.  Recipients must meet income guidelines as set by the Department of Social Services.  For more information about this program contact the VIC at 831-2273.


LUV Awards
  The Volunteer and Information Center hosts a community wide recognition event called the LUV (Lifting Up Volunteers) Awards.  All community agencies and individuals are asked to nominate volunteers for service recognition.  Volunteers are recognized in the areas of Outstanding Individual Volunteer, Outstanding Volunteer Group or Organization, Outstanding Volunteer Project, Outstanding Youth Individual Volunteer and Outstanding Volunteer Youth Group or Organization.  The forms are available by contacting our office or may be printed from the button at the top of this page.  Forms are also available on disc for convenience in completing the nominations.

The Adrianne Dantin Lifetime Achievement award is also presented to an individual who has a long history of volunteer activities in the Henderson Community.

The 2007 LUV Awards will take place April 17, 2007 at Wolf's Banquet and Convention Center at the corner of First and Green Streets in Henderson, KY.


Winter Warm Up
  This program, established in 2001 to provide needy school aged children with a new winter coat.  Referrals for this program are made through the Family Resource Center.


Agency Coalition Tracking System (ACTS)
  The Volunteer and Information Center operates a clearinghouse program which monitors and assimilates information on services rendered by community service agencies and churches to the needy in the Henderson community.  The system identifies abusers, which helps the agencies and churches in maximizing their resources.


Volunteer Referral
  The Volunteer and Information Center interviews potential volunteers and makes appropriate referrals to non-profit agencies who consequently use the volunteers to assist the agencies in implementing programs and projects.



Volunteer Connection and Recruitment
  The Volunteer and Information Center serves as a volunteer recruitment agent for non- profit agencies in the Henderson community.  Volunteers are served by being provided with information and options regarding volunteer opportunities.  Weekly volunteer opportunities are listed in the local newspaper and on local radio and television stations.    


Disaster Services Program
  The Disaster Services program enables the Volunteer and Information Center to assist the Red Cross and city and county governments in the management of convergent volunteers in the event of a disaster.



Volunteer Consultation Services
  The Volunteer and Information Center provides consultation services to area agencies, organizations and businesses, assisting them in the development and refinement of volunteer programs.  Establishment of corporate volunteer programs is tailored to a company’s interest and limitations.


Community Resource Guide
  The Volunteer and Information Staff has developed and maintains a comprehensive directory of social services available in Henderson, Union, and Webster counties in Kentucky, along with a few Evansville, IN agencies.  The Community Resource Guide also contains information on local, state and federal government offices as well as licensed day care facilities.  The Community Resource Guide is produced every two years and available to any agency, church, business or individual to purchase.


United Way Days of Caring
  The Volunteer and Information Center coordinates in partnership with the United Way of Henderson County projects between area United Way member agencies and United Way PaceSetter businesses.  The projects are carried out during the United Way campaign.


Make A Difference Day
  The Volunteer and Information Center coordinates annually with corporations, organizations, clubs and youth organizations to participate in the nations largest day of volunteerism.  Make A Difference Day is held the fourth Saturday in October each year.


Adopt A Family for Christmas
  This program, established in 1989, provides Christmas gifts to low income families who otherwise would not be able to afford them.  These families are allowed to register with the Volunteer and Information Center.  Information, including name, age, gender, clothing sizes and special requests, is taken by Volunteer and Information Center staff.  Families are placed according to the specifications of the volunteers wishing to adopt a family.  These volunteers then shop, wrap and deliver the gifts to the family.  The amount of money spent and/or the number or gifts a family receives is at the discretion of the volunteer.


Information and Referral Line
  This line links people with people with problems to community resources available to help or alleviate those problems.

Clothe A Kid for School
  This program, established in 1995, provides low income school children with a least one new set of clothing to begin the new year.  In collaboration with area Family Resource Centers, a list of needy children, complete with specific size information, is provided to the Volunteer and Information Center.  Sizes are provided to volunteers within the community, who purchase the clothing.  The amount of clothing purchased is at the discretion of the volunteer.  Volunteers may also make a monetary donation and the Volunteer and Information Center staff will purchase the needed clothing.  The clothing is then distributed to the Family Resource Center for disbursement to the child.


Help Others Keep Cool
  This program, established in 1987, provides a new room sized air conditioner to those low income members of the Henderson community with medical conditions worsened by the heat and unable to purchase an air conditioner for themselves.  Volunteers may make monetary donations toward the purchase of an air conditioner or choose to purchase a unit.  Fans are also provided through this program.   Medical conditions are not a requirement to receive a fan.  Recipients must meet income guidelines as set by the Department of Social Insurance.


Taste of Henderson
  The Volunteer and Information Center collaborates with local restaurants, caterers, bakeries and other food services to showcase their specialties.  Participates may pay a nominal fee or donate canned goods to sample local delicacies.  All money collected is used for the Volunteer and Information Center’s Adopt A Family program and canned goods are given to a local community service agency.


Chicken Run
  The VIC coordinates the distribution of chicken products to local food pantries, churches and other non profit organizations that serve or distribute food to the needy.  The food is donated by Tyson Foods and may occur several time a year.


Christmas Clearinghouse
  This program works to eliminate the duplication of assistance to some families at Christmas while others go without needed assistance.  This list is coordinated with other churches, agencies, and organizations interested in adopting families at Christmas.


Bountiful Thanksgiving
  This program, established in 1998, provides food baskets to needy families in the Henderson County area.  Local families may register their need for a food basket with the Volunteer and Information Center.  Volunteers donate food items or money that enables the Volunteer and Information Center staff to assemble food baskets.  Volunteers also may select a family to shop for and arrange for delivery of the food basket to the client’s home.  The amount of money spent and/or the number and type of items included in a basket is at the discretion of the volunteer.
